Ever Ancient, Ever New

The CD includes a range of works celebrating seasons and moments within the liturgical year

Luke Mayernik

The title of this recording is most apt. It references St Augustine’s famous apprehension of God’s beauty (“Late have I loved you, O Beauty ever ancient, ever new …”) but also describes the blend of traditional chant and modern tonality in this elegant selection of liturgical music.

The CD includes a range of works celebrating seasons and moments within the liturgical year: acclamations and carols for Advent and Christmas, music for weddings and funerals, motets for specific days such as Maundy Thursday — and several glorious thanksgiving psalms.

Young composer Luke Mayernik’s compositions are beautifully sung by a host of superb voices. Particularly powerful are the stately and emotive Advent and Christmas “Alleluias”, exquisitely performed by cantors Cahen Taylor and Catherine van der Salm.

In addition to ceremonial use within the church, Ever Ancient, Ever New might serve as an inspiring focus for private contemplation and meditation.

This fine CD also provides enhanced content via PC or Mac, including free lyric sheets and links to octavos and single instrument parts for purchase.
